Sense and sensibility

Some words of wisdom from the Sun’s columnists today as we countdown towards the Day of Reckoning. Let’s hope most voters (of which I, as a humble PRC, am not one) chew these over before they go to the polls and let’s have some sanity restored:

“Just what are we in for after the election is over?” asks Stuart Hayward. “Is civility to be abandoned in the interest of scoring political points, no matter the damage that barbaric language and symbolism might have on our children and our community in general? Are we to have racial tensions further exploited from finger-pointing and hints of vengeance under the guise of “conversation”? Are threats and payback to be the way power is wielded? … Violence and vengeance, whether in words, deeds or spirit, are not what Bermuda is about.”

Tom Vesey: “Our only choice next Tuesday is between the UBP and the PLP as we currently find them – not as they once were, and not as we wish they would be.”

Larry Burchall:“In this election, despite strong efforts to paint black majority Bermudians as victims in their own society, despite strenuous efforts to conjure up new ‘boogeymen’, most intelligent people know that ‘boogeymen’ are not real … This election will likely see Bermuda’s “middle ground thinking Voter” flex their ‘X’. In this tenth universal suffrage election, I hope the MGT Voter wins.”

New features …

Regular readers (how grandiose after a week’s blogging! – that will be you three sniggering at the back, then) will notice a couple of new features. I love the Sonific widget which is free and allows you to customise your own playlist from their eclectic library. They don’t have much mainstream stuff – which is not a bad thing as there are some real hidden gems in there. I will try and refresh this playlist frequently.I have also added links to previous posts, your comments and links to some of the other blogs I follow as well as some of my favourite podcasts. I was going to add the strangely addictive Twitter but I haven’t really got the hang of that yet – and there only seems to be me and The Limey trying to use it. Check out Phil’s site if you want to see how it works and follow his random thoughts during the day. Be great to have the Island a-Twittering next year. Even better to have The Good Doctor Ewart signed up so we can keep tabs on him! Thanks for all your comments (no, really – I have had a surprising number of messages drop in my inbox this week). Glad you enjoy the blog – and keep the comments coming.

Vote for Sluggo!

Dwayne Leverock dives to dismiss India's Robin Uthappa.
Bermuda’s own sultan of spin, Dwayne (Sluggo) Leverock has been nominated as one cricket’s six personalities of the year by The Guardian! Reporter Andy Bull writes: “A man whose fame was out of proportion to his talent, but in proportion to his, well, proportions, Leverock gave hope, inspiration and consolation to club cricketers everywhere. The sight of his 20-stone bulk sliding to the right like a jelly slipping off a plate to take a fantastic catch off Robin Uthappa was one of the most enjoyable of the World Cup.”

Relive Sluggo’s fantastic catch!

Log on here to vote for Sluggo!
