A quiet Wordle

//wordle.net

Wordled: Premier Brown

If you feel like disappearing into one of those time-wasting black holes of the web, mosey over to Wordle, a fiendishly addictive little program invented by Jonathan Feinberg, an IBM software engineer. Simply enter text or random words, click ‘Go’ and watch Wordle come up with random word clouds. I created the above example by pasting the first few pars of Premier Ewart Brown’s Wikipedia entry. You can tweak colours, fonts and layout to your heart’s content. Have fun.

Apple unlocks iPhone … in Hong Kong

Apple selling unlocked iPhone 3G in Hong Kong | Apple – CNET News

Not quite sure why Hong Kong is so special – maybe they just can’t fight the tide of illegal unlocked phones in China – but how about cutting lil’ old Bermuda a similar deal too, huh?

New pod for the rest of us

As much as I love The Guardian’s Football Weekly and The Times’ Game podcasts, it does get a bit tedious for us non-Prem fans listening to all the Premier and Champions League hype week in, week out. Fortunately there’s a lively new Football League pod, hosted by BBC Five Live’s Mark Clemmit. This week’s even include a spot with The Superhoops’ own Gareth Ainsworth. Not that I’m biased or anything. Anyway, it’s a welcome addition to weekly listening. Of course, when the R’s get promoted, I won’t give a toss about life in the lower leagues …

Layout redux

I know, yet another new look. Am suffering from designers’ ADD. This one is Redoable Lite by Dean Robinson. Neat and clean, does the job I think.

Android arrives

As much as I lust after a 3G iPhone, T-Mobile’s G1, the first to feature Google’s Android operating system is definitely one to watch.

It may not yet have the killer design of the iPhone but if you rely heavily on Google as I do (Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Docs, etc), then the G1 is a very promising start. the US$179 (with 2-year agreement and cheaper US data plans) boasts push GMail, a fast Google Chrome Lite browser, cut and paste functions, voice dialing and multimedia messaging, on-the-go syncing, expansion slots, higher res camera, and a direct hook into Amazon’s cheaper and DRM-free Mp3 Store. Food for thought indeed …

Bermuda in campaign spotlight

Bermuda got some unwanted publicity yesterday when Barack Obama’s campaign released this ad accusing John McCain of being on the side of tax-dodging Bermuda-based US companies. Anyone who knows anything about reinsurance and insurance knows the issue is a whole lot more complicated than that – I’d like to see Obama turn around and diss the industry when Bermuda companies bail the US out of the next natural catastrophe.   To nuderstand Bermuda’s role, check out the Association of Bermuda Insurers & Reinsurers site under “US Taxation”. For more rebuttals see The Royal Gazette.

Still, it didn’t do Bermuda any favours with the bulk of mainstream voters who have no idea about how offshore business works – and it underlines the dilemma many Bermudians feel: as much as they wish to finally see a black US president, what price might that cost for the Island’s economy?

Ghost of a goal

If you haven’t seen this cock-up from Watford v Reading on the weekend, this is surely one of the most bizarre goals ever “scored”. It goes down as a Eustace own goal – even though the ball never went anywhere near the goal!

Nigerians to buy Newcastle?

A Nigerian consortium is apparently bidding to buy troubled Premier League circus Newcastle United. Nigerians? Buying Newcastle? You just have that feeling someone at St. James’s Park fell for  one of those e-mail scams

Desktop sports fun!

The greatest internet sports games of all time | Sport | guardian.co.uk

Brilliant selection of free online sports games selected by the chaps at The Guardian. Have so far tried my mouse at Office Mini-Golf, Little Master Cricket and the spectacular (fro free) PGA.com World Tour game. Good job I work for myself or I’d have to fire myself for time-wasting on a Friday …

AIG bailout explained

Not that I want to turn Breezeblog into a financial blog, but given the far-reaching impact the AIG problem could have on the world markets, let alone Bermuda, I thought this blog from Kevin LaCroix’s D&O Diary is worth reading as it explains what is happening in layman’s terms:

A Closer Look at the Fed’s $85 Billion AIG Bailout : The D & O Diary
